Step-by-Step Instructions
1. The Head and Body (Pastel Pink Yarn)
We will start at the top of the head and work our way down in continuous rounds.
Round 1: Make a magic ring and work 6 sc into it. (6)
Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (12)
Round 3: 1 sc, inc - repeat around. (18)
Round 4: 2 sc, inc - repeat around. (24)
Round 5: 3 sc, inc - repeat around. (30)
Rounds 6-10: Sc in each stitch around. (30)
Note: Insert your safety eyes between rounds 7 and 8, about 6 stitches apart. Embroider a tiny, sweet smile right between them using your black yarn.
Round 11: 3 sc, dec - repeat around. (24)
Round 12: 2 sc, dec - repeat around. (18) Stuff the head firmly with fiberfill!
Round 13: 1 sc, dec - repeat around. (12)
Rounds 14-18: We are now forming the body! Sc in each stitch around for 5 rounds. (12)
Round 19: Dec around. (6) Stuff the body lightly, fasten off, and sew the bottom closed.
2. The Gills (Make 3 for each side of the head)
The fluffy gills are what make the axolotl so recognizable!
Using your Dark Pink yarn, attach it directly to the side of the head (around round 7 or 8).
Chain 4. Work 1 sl st into the 2nd chain from the hook, 1 sc into the next, and 1 hdc into the last chain. Slip stitch back into the same space on the head to secure it.
Repeat this process to make 3 gills stacked vertically on the right side of the face, and 3 gills on the left side of the face.
3. The Tail (Pastel Pink Yarn)
Round 1: MR with 4 sc. (4)
Round 2: 1 sc, inc - repeat twice. (6)
Rounds 3-5: Sc in each stitch around. (6)
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Flatten the tail slightly and sew it to the lower back of the body.
4. The Tiny Limbs (Make 4, Pastel Pink Yarn)
Make a magic ring with 5 sc. (5)
Sc around for 2 rounds. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Sew two arms just below the neck, and two legs near the base of the body.
Weave in any remaining ends, and your squishy new axolotl is ready to be cuddled!
